As the trends in swimwear change, so does the technology that goes into designing it. Most traditional swimsuits are designed for style out of an array of different materials. The disadvantage that most swimming suits have is that germs and bacteria tend to grow very quickly on wet bathing suits. Wearing a damp swimming suit for a long period of time can cause infections and rashes in both adults and children. Because the content of chlorine in swimming pools is so high chlorine that is absorbed into your swimming suit also tends to render bacteria. Additionally chlorine breaks down most materials over time. This means that a traditional swimsuit will usually not last more than a year when it was used often because it will deteriorate. New technology has allowed companies to manufacture chlorine resistant swimwear that helps lessen the growth of bacteria and protects against material damage.
Chlorine resistant swimwear is made with a newly developed material that combines numerous materials to make one hybrid material. The largest component is polyurethaneurea elastic fiber and it is the one material that is chlorine resistant by itself. Polyurethaneurea elastic fiber is made of small plastic fibers woven so tightly together that it prevents chlorine from seeping into the swimming suit. Additionally because the material is plastic it is not absorbent and chlorine will not be absorbed into the material. Often times this material is mixed with small amounts of nylon cloth so it is more comfortable and flexible. This modern material makes swimwear durable, long lasting and resistant to chlorine and even salt.
Most competition swimwear is now being made with chlorine resistant materials so that it lasts for long periods of time, even with extensive use. However, there are not many traditional style swimming suits made with chlorine resistant materials. You can find some traditional chlorine resistant swimwear items online or even at swimwear retailers.
