Swimmers Goggles

Many aquatic sports require swimmers to wear swimmers goggles.   Goggles protect the swimmers eyes from water, chlorine and salt.  Additionally they enable the swimmer to see clearly underwater.  All water goggles are air tight to prevent harm or damage to the swimmers eyes.  Over time chlorine and even salt will wear at the tissues of the eye and cause damage that can lead to blindness.  Without goggles swimmers would not be able to routinely practice or compete underwater.  Because goggles allow swimmers to see under the water they also aid them in their performance during practice and competition.

There are two main types of swimmers goggles; dual eyed goggles or singular goggles.  Dual eyed goggles are the most common in many competitive aquatic sports.  They have small air tight lenses that protect each eye.  They enable swimmers to see in every direction around them and do not often block view from any angle.  Also these types of goggles are extremely comfortable and are held on with one simple thin strap that goes around the head.  Singular goggles are a quite a bit larger and are used for many extreme aquatic sports like wake boarding or water skiing.  They are made with one lens that covers the entire front of the face, and both eyes. These goggles are often large and heavy and they are designed more for protection rather than functionality.

You can find any type of swimmers goggles at your local aquatic sport retailer.  Before purchasing goggles you should try them on to ensure they will fit you properly.  The goggles should be air tight around your eyes.  Additionally the strap should be able to be tightened enough so that the goggles do not move from your eyes, even with quick head movements.  If the goggles you try on do not do one or either of these things, they are not the goggles for you.  Goggles are designed to provide safety and protection, if the goggles do not fit, they cannot provide protection.
